Professional ethos

What do I want as a librarian?

I want to be able to support people who need encouragement to develop new skills, be that information literacy, basic reading, online searching, social media or otherwise.

How do I intend to do that?

By being the best information professional I can be.  I will continue to engage in professional development, be that attending courses, engaging with colleagues, joining professional associations or doing my own research studies.

What do I consider the key attributes for an information professional?

A willingness to learn.  A willingness to share what I learn.  A belief that everyone can learn and everyone should be encouraged to learn.  A belief that information is for everyone, not just the privileged few.  I advocate for not only the existence of the profession but also for its growing importance in the Digital Age.

And in my personal life?

I book-cross, loan books, share books, tweet, share links on Facebook and Twitter, blog and talk about my library and information experiences.  I embrace the term “librarian” and challenge the stereotypes.
